Truth and Lies

Ok, everyone, this week we are going to talk about lies.

I wrote a few months ago that one of my goals for this year was to be more informed about current events — I am failing miserably so far — BUT when the hullabaloo hit the fan in the past week or two about the border situation and the issue of families being separated, I dug a bit deeper to try to understand the situation a bit more (p.s. this is NOT a political piece…I don’t really want to do that today. I just wanted to use that situation as an example!).

I was horrified by what I found. The amount of fake news, lies and deliberately misleading information was just ridiculous. I always knew that the news industry was a bit sensationalist, but the amount of blatantly biased and even untrue information was a shock to me. I was seeking facts to formulate my own opinion, and instead I was finding lies, misleading information and “facts” that were deliberately spun in one direction or another to try to sway my opinion.  It was nearly impossible for me to form an honest opinion on the matter because it seemed like everything was a lie.

It got me thinking. How much of our world is built on lies? If our very “news” sources are feeding us lies, how on earth can we find truth? Well, the answer is, we can’t. We can’t “on earth” find truth — it has to come from God, through His Word, the Bible, and through what He says to us by the Holy Spirit.

The devil feeds us lies that bring us low, cripple us, and make us incapable of carrying out the work that God created us to do. Lies like:

“I’m way too far gone for God to ever forgive me. I can’t change”

“My marriage can never be fixed — we have messed up too many times.”

“I have failed so many times and can’t do anything right – I am a failure at everything and don’t deserve a second chance.”

“I am broken and don’t deserve love. God could never love someone like me.”

“My family has always been dysfunctional and broken — nothing will ever break the cycle”. 

“I am not beautiful — I don’t fit the mold, so I am worthless.”

“I have no purpose — the world would be better off without me.”


Once you hear those lies and allow yourself to believe in just a scrap of one, you start to develop cracks in your spirit that will have you crumbling before long at all. The only way for you to be whole again is to patch those cracks with the truth found in God’s word.

Here are just a few truths for you — take some time and find some on your own to do battle against whatever lies you may be believing today – there are far too many for me to write down!

But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved. – Ephesians 2:4-5 

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  – 1 John 1:9

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  -Ezekiel 36:26

But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. – Psalm 86:15

bible-book-book-bindings-1112048Now, if you’re like me, you like proof! Reading through the Bible, there are a ton of stories of what God can do. He took a man who persecuted and killed Christians and made him one of His greatest disciples. He took murderers, adulterers and prostitutes and used them to change history. He changed hearts, minds, lives and families all to His glory and the good of His people. And He has changed me. That’s all the proof I need.

Do you want the truth? The truth is that you are loved so intensely by your creator that He gave up His only Son for you. The truth is that He has seen it all, knows it all and loves you anyway–no one is too far gone. The truth is that He created you uniquely to bring Him joy and He thinks you are the most beautiful, special, worthwhile thing ever, so believe it. The truth is that no marriage is lost, no child is too far gone, and no family is hopeless because God is a God of possibilities and CAN change it all.


Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD’s great
love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.  They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. — Lamentations 3:21-23
